The next day, Eliza came to work in a very happy mood. Something about her seemed different.
"So Eliza," I asked, "hows life?"
"Super duper," she replied, dreamily.
"So... not to pry or anything, but do you want to tell me WHY you're so happy?" I asked.
"Yes," Eliza replied, smiling, "let's go in the Lounge."
I followed Eliza into the Lounge. I kew it had to be something fairly personal, because she wanted to talk in private.
"Okay, so I was on IM last night, and Lester started IMing me, and he told me I"m pretty and he likes me too!"
"ELIZA!" I squeeled, "that's great!"
"I know," she sighed, "and then he called me."
"And???" I asked, anxiously.
"He asked me out!" she cheered.
"Eliza!" I shouted hugging her, "I'm so happy for you!"
"It's tonight," Eliza stated, "here."
"You're coming here?" I asked, "so I assume you want the night off?"
"Pretty please?" Eliza begged, "this is a huge night for me."
"Of course," I replied, "any requests.
"Table twenty six," Eliza said, "and could you play waitress and wait on us tonight?"
"Sure," I replied, "anything else?"
"That's it, I think," Eliza replied, "but will you help me get ready for my date tonight?"
"Absolutely," I replied, "we'll go to your house at 5:00 to get ready. Okay?"
"Okay!" Eliza replied, "thank you so much Brooke."
She hugged me and skipped back to work, happy, happy, happy.
"Wait!" I stopped her.
"What?" Eliza asked.
"Can I tell David?" I asked.
"Yes, but David ONLY," she replied, walking out.
Soon, David walked into the Lounge.
"Guess what?" I asked him.
"If it's about Eliza & her personal life, don't tell me," David replied, "she'll get mad."
"She told me it's okay," I said, "anyhow, Eliza's going on her first date."
"Wow," David replied, "the kid's grown up."
"I know," I replied, "she goes away to college in two years."
"Dang," David said, "wonder if she'll come back to us."
"Let's not worry about then," I told him, "let's focus on the time we still have left with her."
"Brooke," David said, "she's not our daughter."
"I realize that," I sighed, "but I do care about her like a daughter."
"Ditto," David replied, "I can't believe it's been almost three years since we've known her."
I shook my head.
"She's probably my favorite employee," David told me, "but you know wo my favorite co-owner is?"
"I am," I said. (Haha.)
"Darn right," David replied. We sat together on the couch and watched a movie. I laid him head against him and he put his arm around my shoulders.
About an hour later, I woke up. I guess I had fallen asleep. David was watching football. I was still leaning on his shoulder. I looked up at him and gave him an annoyed look, because he knows I hate football with a passion.
"Hello," he said, smiling.
"Hullo," I replied, snatching the remote from him. I turned off the TV.
"Hey!" he exclaimed.
"I hate that crap," I remided him. He rolled his eyes.
"Women."
I playfully hit him with a decorative pillow and glanced at my watch.
4:59.
